3 reasons why we don’t compare with the Joneses

It is human nature to compare. We can’t help ourselves. The neighbour’s (the Jones) grass always seems greener and social media reinforces that lie. Don’t get sucked in, I try not to. I am here trying to do me, most of us can see through fakism (my made-up word for being fake and pretentious). I understand that most of us are just trying to put our best foot forward but at some point, you have to bring the other foot. I am saying, pretending to be someone that you are not is simply not sustainable. The charade won’t last! Maintaining any relationship is hard, especially when children are involved. This is why you need true friends not quantity, but quality. People you can be yourself with.

The Joneses have their own story– Yes, everyone’s story is different, how can I compare my life with someone who’s story is completely different from mine. Most of the time, the so-called Jones are not even aware of you, they are busy minding their business and you are there constantly comparing. They are living their lives and because you are too busy comparing, you forget to live your life and create your own story. You sadly become a watcher. Instead of watching people take their children to the playground, stop and do a fun activity with your own child. Let the Joneses inspire you not intimidate you. I have been there, watching people live their lives on YouTube until they apologise for not being their authentic self or for not showing us the full picture.

The Joneses are not telling us the full story– Yes, you see the lifestyle of the Jones, but you don’t know the full story of how they got there. The blood, sweat and tears that went into their achievements. You get to see the fruit of their labour, but you missed the part where they toiled, planted and nurtured. They don’t tell us the full story because most of use don’t want to hear about the time and money they invested, the sleepless nights and the mistakes. We just want to see the house, cars, gadgets and admire their green grass.

The Joneses grass is plastic!– Speaking of grass, the Jones grass is plastic! Stop comparing your real grass with an evergreen plastic! Guys, what are those things eating up your time, are they helping you build your dream or vision or is it destroying it? You can get inspired by people, just don’t overwhelm yourself and cripple your creativity. You have a beautiful story of your own to live, but you must be intentional about it, it won’t just happen to you. You have to plan and put in the work. Comparing with the Joneses might keep you stagnant. Go, start your story, make your mistakes and water your real grass!

The grass is not always greener on the other side.
We are all good at wearing masks that we want people to see.

This is so True and beautiful.

We must all learn to believe in what God has made us to be. There is alot inside of us. We all have a Unique purpose . We have to focus on our dreams and make our story.
We should learn to remind ourselves that, the real grass is not always green year in year out.

I love what Loveth said about not forgetting to leave your lives just because you are watching others leave theirs. Our own Story is So Unique.

Thanks so much Loveth for sharing.
May God bless and grant you more Wisdom.
